USA Boccia in BISFed World Championships

Marck's win

The attention at the 2014 Boccia World Championships switched from Team play to Individual Play over the past two days (Sept 24-25).  Team USA had mix results in the preliminary rounds. All of our players played well and have learned a great deal in the best Boccia competition of their lives.

AustinAustin Hanson (KS) led the way for team USA in the BC3 division with two prelimin victories.  Austin started strong with a close 4-3 win over Ken Verwiimp of Belgium. He followed that win up with 4-1 win over Jari Rummukainen of Finland.  Austin’s two wins moves him on to the group of 16, which is very significant for his hopes to make the Rio Paralympic Games.  The top 24 BC3 players in the world get the opportunity to compete in the 2016 Paralympic Games.

Marck Harrison (OH) split a pair of games in the BC2 division, losing to Soyeong Jeong of Korea by 6-1 but bounced back to beat Luis Antonio Campos Aguilar of Mexico 4-3. Cornelius Oatis (OH) had a tough BC1 match against Antonio Marques of Portugal, losing 10-0. In his second game he lost a very close match in a 3-2 decision to Qi Zhang of China.

Rafael DeJesus (NY) had a tough few days in the BC 2 division losing to Jeongmin Sohn of Korea 4-1 and Adam Dukovich of Canada 10-0. Finally Brigid Mason faced some stiff competition in the BC2 competition as she was being reviewed by the BISFed classification committee and determined to actually be a BC1.  Although this does not change her status for this tournament, it is a final classification decision and will be significant for our USA Boccia National Team in the future.  Brigid lost to Christina Goncalves of Portugal and Jesus Damian Oseguera Osorio of Mexico.

More competition to come…
