2011 U.S. Paralympics Track and Field High School All- Americans

U.S. Paralympics has announced its 2011 Track & Field High School All- American Team. Athletes from 24 states are represented on the list. New Jersey leads the way with four athletes, while Washington and Oregon are close behind with three athletes each.

“This is a very talented group of young athletes, which includes a medalist from the 2011 IPC Athletics World Championships and several athletes who have already competed for the U.S. on the international stage” said U.S. Paralympics Track and Field High Performance Director Cathy Sellers.

“We are seeing a lot of rising talent come from the states that have inclusion of Paralympic events in their state high school track & field meets, as well as areas with strong Paralympic Sport Clubs where athletes have year-round access to coaching, training and competition opportunities.”

Six athletes on the list will be competing for Team USA at the Parapan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico this November: David Brown (Hazelwood, Mo.), Amberlynn Weber (Greenacres, Wash.), Sydney Bolen (Memphis, Tenn.), Carleigh DeWald (Canby, Ore.), Chelsea McClammer (Spokane, Wash.) and Gianfranco Iannotta (Garfield, N.J.).

The selection criteria looked at multiple performances by each athlete compared against the “A” standard for the U.S. Paralympics Track & Field National Team. The ranking list is not a conventional list as the results are weighted according to the level and type of disability. The general disability categories of athletes named to the All-American list are visual impairment, cerebral palsy, dwarfism, amputation/limb loss, intellectual disability and spinal cord injury.

2011 Boy’s Track Athlete of the Year

Austin Pruitt (Greenacres, Wash.) has won Athlete of the Year for the second year in a row.  Competing at his first major international event, Pruitt won a bronze medal in the 200m (T34) at the 2011 IPC Athletics World Championships and is currently ranked third in the world in the 200m and fourth in the world in the 100m in his classification.

2011 Boy’s Field Athlete of the Year

George Anglin (Troy, Mo.) recently graduated from Troy Buchanan High School. His performance in the javelin at the 2011 National Junior Disability Championships was the highest percentage against the National Team “A” standard of any field performance ranked for this list.  Anglin competes for Disabled Athlete Sports Association, a Paralympic Sport Club in St. Louis, Mo.

2011 Girl’s Track Athlete of the Year

Overcoming surgery in 2010, Chelsea McClammer (Spokane, Wash.) climbs back to the top of the track list this year.  As a 14 year old, McClammer was a finalist in the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games, and was the only teenager on the track & field squad that year.  In 2011, she leads the rankings in the 200m, 400m, 800m and 1500m.

2011 Girl’s Field Athlete of the Year

Kaitlyn Schewanick (Oxford, Ala.) leads the field in the discus with a performance that ranked as the highest percentage against the National Team A, but she is also is a very versatile athlete ranking in the shot put and javelin as well.  Schewanick is entering her senior year at Oxford High School.
