FIT Kids Act
The `Fitness Integrated with Teaching Kids Act' or the `FIT Kids Act' is sponsored by Rep. Ron Kind in the House and Sen. Tom Harkin in the Senate is designed to strengthen physical education programs in schools and teach children healthy habits.
The Act would engage parents and the public by requiring all schools, districts and states to report on students’ physical activity, including the amount of time spent in required physical education in relation to the recommended national standard. The Act would further ensure appropriate professional development for health and physical education teachers. In addition, it would fund research to examine the link between children’s health and their academic achievement, and recommend effective ways to combat childhood obesity and improve healthy living and physical activity.
Healthcare Reform - America's Health Future Act (Senator Max Baucus)
Provisions included in the legislation to promote preventive health care and wellness would: provide annual "wellness visits" for Medicare participants and their doctors to focus on prevention; eliminate out-of-pocket costs for screening and prevention services in Medicare; create incentives in Medicare and Medicaid for completing healthy lifestyle programs; increase federal Medicaid funding for states that cover recommended preventive services and immunizations for enrollees at no extra cost; and provide free tobacco cessation services for pregnant women in Medicaid.
