BlazeSports Atlanta Junior Hawks in Southeast Regional Wheelchair Basketball Tournament

Day 1 of the Southern Regionals

BlazeSports Atlanta Junior Hawks started the Southern Regionals with their Prep team playing three games on Day 1. In their first match up against the Charlotte Hornets.  Hawks started strong behind good defense from their starting five players.  Collin Lancaster led the Hawks at halftime with 6 points followed by Taevan Grant with 4 points. Hawks up 18-10 at halftime. The second half the Hawks were able to continue to rotate in all 13 players resulting in 7 of the 13 players making the offensive stat sheet. Collin Lancaster led the Hawks with 8 points. Eric Francis and Taevan Grant each added 6 points. Bailey Moody and Zachary Armas scored 4 points, while, John Joiner and Jeramiah scored 2 points.  Hawks win 34-20.

In the second game the Prep squad faced the host team Lakeshore Sharks and repeated their efforts from game one, making sure all 13 players got playing time. Eric Francis led all scorers with 8 points followed by Collin Lancaster and Taevan Grant with 6 points each. Bailey Moody scored 4 points while Malachi Kirkland, Zachary Armas and Jeramiah Million rounded out the scoring by adding 2 points.  Hawks win 30- 10.

The third and final match up for the BlazeSports Atlanta JR. Hawk’s Prep team on Day 1 was against the Mississippi Wheelcats. The Hawks had their best start of the day against the Wheelcats with a 22-1 first quarter performance. The Hawks had 13 players sharing court time and rolled to a 34-5 win.  Bailey Moody led all scorers with 10 points, followed by Taevan Grant with 8 points and Collin Lancaster, Eric Francis and Malachi Kirkland each with 4 points. Tanner Atkins and John Joiner finished up the scoring with 2 points each. Hawks win 34-5.

The Hawks’ three straight wins place them in their third consecutive Southern Regional Championship game. The Hawks will face the Lakeshore Sharks.

Varsity splits a pair of games…

The BlazeSports Atlanta Junior Hawks Varsity squad, seeded #2 for the Southern Regionals started the day off with a convincing win over the #7 seed Rancho Renegades (CA). Josh Joines, Brent O’Grady and Treyvon Smith led the Hawks at halftime with 4 points each. Hawks led at the break 22-4.  The Hawks spread the offensive around to 8 players and won 46-20.  Treyvon Smith led all scorers with 14 points. Josh Joines and Sam Armas finished with 8 points, followed by Brent O’Grady with 6 points and Cameron Elzey with 4 points. Jordon Kozloski, Luke Hutchinson, and Chance Boyd rounded out the scoring with 2 points each. Hawks win 46-20.

The win placed them in the semi-final round against the #3 seed Dallas Jr. Mavs.  The team played against Dallas in December at the Houston tournament with the Hawks losing a very competitive game.  They had a tough first half shooting only 23% while Dallas found the bucket 38% of the time to lead 27-12 at half time.

The Hawks rallied in the second period and outscored Dallas 23-20, but fell short in the final score 47-35.  Josh Joines led the team with 19 points, followed by Brent O’Grady with 8 points. Sam Armas, Treyvon Smith, Luke Hutchinson and KJ Reese each scored 2 points.

The Hawks’ one win and one loss moves them into the 3rd/4th place playoff game where they will the #4 seed Grand Rapid Junior Pacers.
