Hawks Win SEC Titles
Congratulations to the Atlanta Junior Wheelchair Hawks Varsity and Prep teams for winning the 2014 Southeast Regional Junior Wheelchair Basketball Tournament. The Hawks Varsity squad earned a back-to-back SEC title, while the Hawks Prep team extended their winning streak since 2012 to 30 straight games and their third consecutive SEC Championship.
The Hawks Prep team would face the Mississippi Wheel Cats twice on Day 2 of the tournament. The Wheel Cats were victorious over the Lakeshore Sharks and Charlotte Bobcats and earned a spot in the Prep Championship Game. However, they would have to play the Hawks in the final game of the preliminary round. The Hawks played one of their best games of the year with 5 of the 8 players in the scoring column. Collin Lancaster led the Hawks with 12 points, while both Eric Francis and Taevan Grant each added 8 points. Cameron Elzey and John Joiner rounded out the scoring with 4 points each. Hawks win the first game 36-13.
Both teams had a three hour break before the Championship rematch. The Hawks went into the Championship game, their last regular season game before Nationals, concentrating on defense. The dynamic duo of Cameron Elzey and Collin Lancaster led the Hawks’ defense which held the Wheel Cats to only 5 points. On the offensive side of the score sheet the Hawks were able to get 6 of 8 players contributing. Eric Francis led all scorers with 10 points and was followed closely by Collin Lancaster who had 8 points. Jon Joiner scored 4 points and Taevan Grant, Cameron Elzey and Cade Maynor each had 2 points. Hawks win 26-5.
Collin Lancaster was voted to the Prep All-Tournament Team, while Eric Francis won his second consecutive MVP trophy.
On the Varsity side of the tournament the Hawks also had to play a final preliminary game against the Junior Thunder (NC). The Hawks continued to work on getting all 12 players quality playing minutes as well as scoring opportunities. Seven Hawks made the score sheet with Treyvon Grant leading the way with 12 points and Kalen Reese and Joshua Joines each adding 8 points. Chance Boyd and Luke Hutchinson each had 4 points and Samuel Armas and Makayla Jones rounded out the scoring with 2 points each. Hawks win 40-26.
The Hawks moved on to the Championship game against regional rivals the Lakeshore Lakers (AL). This would be a rematch from Saturday’s game which the Hawks won easily 55-28. The Hawks jumped out to an early lead behind a very successful full court press. Hawks led at the intermission 30-11. The second half belonged to the reserves and 8 of the 12 Hawks made the score column. Hawks win 49-35. Joshua Joines the Hawks with 12 points, followed closely by Bryan Powell who had a season high 10 points. Treyvon Smith and Samuel Armas scored 6 points while Chance Boyd and Brent O’Grady each added 4 points. Kalen Reese and Luke Hutchinson rounded out the scoring with 2 points each.
Samuel Armas received All-Tournament honors while Joshua Joines was voted MVP of the Varsity tournament. The Varsity Hawks finished the regular season 14-6 and are currently ranked #10 in the country.
