BlazeSports’ Hawks hit the road

Hawks Prep Team: Day 1 of Holiday Tournament

BlazeSports’ prep wheelchair basketball, the Atlanta Junior Wheelchair Hawks, opened the 2014 NWBA Junior Division Holiday Tournament with two impressive wins. Their first game was against the Grand Rapids Jr. Pacers, ranked #11 going into last year’s nationals and a team the Hawks had not paid since the 2012 Nationals in Denver.

The Hawks started strong on both sides of the ball. Offensively, their fast break worked well against a slower Grand Rapids squad. Defensively, their led by point guard Collin Lancaster and Taevon Grant held the Pacers to 6 first half points.  Eric Francis led the Hawks with 8 first half points, followed by Collin Lancaster and Taevan Grant each with 4 points. Hawks led 18-6 at half time.

The Hawks continued the pressure the second half and held the Pacers to 16 points for the game. Offensively, the Hawks had 5 players on the offensive stat sheet.  Eric Francis led all scorers with 14 points, followed by rookie Baily Moody and Taevon Grant, each with 8 points. Collin Lancaster finished off the scoring with 5 points.  Hawks win 35-16.

The Hawks’ second game was against long-time rival RHI Mini Pacers (IN).  The Hawks played the Mini Pacers twice last season, beating them 20-15 in regional play and 28-21 at the National Championship tournament.

The Hawks started off as they did in their first game, combing stifling defense with overwhelming offense.  Hawks led at halftime 23-5. The second half was more of the same, the Hawks firing on all cylinders.  Eric Francis led all scorers with 20 points, followed by Collin Lancaster with 10 and Baily Moody with 8 points.  Taevon Grant added 5 points to round out the Hawks’ 43-16 win.

The two wins put the Junior Hawks as the top seed from Pool A going into Sunday’s semi-finals and two wins away from the championship game. Hawks start playoff day with a match up with the 4th place team from Pool B, the Milwaukee Heat.
