Team USA Competes in 2013 Americas Cup
For the Paralympic sport of Boccia the Road to Rio and the 2016 Paralympic Games starts in Kansas at the 2013 Boccia Americas Cup. Scheduled to take place August 2-9, 2013 in Gardner, KS, the 2013 World Cup is the first major international qualifying competition for the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games.
Boccia teams from Argentina, Bermuda, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, South Africa and the United States will compete in Individual, Pairs and Team play.
“We are very excited about this year’s National Team, said Jeff Jones, Team Leader for Team USA and the Director of Sports for BlazeSports America. “Team USA is the largest USA team is history and includes a mix of experienced players and young first-timers to the international arena. We hope to start the Run for Rio with success in the Americas Cup.”
In the Team Division (BC1 & BC2) the Team USA members include Cornelius Oatis (Columbus, OH), Elizabeth Flora-Swick (Gardner, KS), Christopher Viau (Evanston, IL), Abdallah Anwar (North Hollywood, CA), Rafael DeJesus (Valley Stream, NY) and Marck Harrison (Columbus, OH).
Team USA’s BC3 players include 2012 Paralympian Austin Hanson (Topeka, KS), two athletes from the New York Thunderbolts, Charlie Fleisch (North Massapequa, NY) and Howard Cohen (East Meadow, NY) and rookie to international competition Fawad Zakai (Stone Mountain, GA).
The BC4 Division is represented by two veteran athletes, Charles Brown (Loxahatchee, FL) and Robert Thomas (Masedonia, OH). Denise DeMello (Delray Beach, FL) rounds out the Team USA and is making her international debut.
Thursday, August 1st is arrival day with competition in Pairs and Team play beginning Saturday, August 3rd.
